Workshop Description:

The workshop will highlight the three main challenges of interpreting in K-12 environments and their solutions. The main source material for the workshop is an article that I wrote and had published in the SDCRID In Touch quarterly newsletter. We will also discuss two “Encounters with Reality” RID Views articles during the workshop regarding educational interpreting. Participants will examine practical ways via lecture, article annotation, and group discussion, by which an interpreter will not merely survive but thrive in such a setting.

Educational Objectives:

At the end of this workshop participants will be able to:

Review the history of educational interpreting
Define the term "special needs”
Review the history of the EIPA exam
Discuss 4 challenges to classroom interpreting
Describe 5 real-world Educational Interpreting Scenarios

Presenter Bio:

Joshua Lane has had the privilege of being immersed in the Deaf community for over a decade. I have been a working interpreter for nine years, mainly as an educational interpreter, though most recently on the community side. I earned both my national certification as well as my national educational interpreting credential in 2009. I have been a VRS interpreter for the past three years and currently work part-time at San Diego State University. I also have had the privilege and opportunity to present interpreting workshops, both in-person and online. Being from Los Angeles, I am an avid Lakers and Dodgers fan. When I’m not working or volunteering in my community ministry work, you’ll probably find me on the slopes snowboarding with my beautiful wife!
