Workshop Description:

Social justice, Language Justice, and Disability Justice have often been ignored or removed from educational settings. Educational interpreters often approach the work of educational interpreting as not applicable to their contexts, which is an incorrect assumption. This session will discuss how Language Justice and Disability Justice have often existed in silos from one another. It will elaborate on why Language + Disability Justice must exist as a unified framework and be applied in educational contexts, which means that social justice, Language + Disability Justice should be implemented in K-12 settings as well. We will discuss various scenarios and cases that interpreters have experienced and how you can get to work applying social justice and Language + Disability Justice in educational settings.

Educational Objectives:

At the conclusion of this workshop students will be able to:

  • define social justice broadly, Language Justice, and Disability Justice
  • describe the connections between social justice, Language Justice and Disability Justice and implications for interpreters
  • explain why Language Justice and Disability Justice should be a combined L+DJ framework for Deaf, DeafBlind, DeafDisabled and Hard of Hearing populations in educational contexts
  • articulate the interpreter's role in applying L+DJ in K-12 educational settings
  • interpret case studies from educational context using L+DJ framework identifying justice-related issues in the cases
  • illustrate how and justify the use of L+DJ framework as interpreters in educational settings
