Workshop Language: American Sign Language

Workshop Description:

Working with Deaf students is not a one size fits all approach. While we know that as interpreters we should be matching the language and abilities of our clients, there are many factors that go into a proper interpretation for each student and figuring out how to match each one is not always an easy task. In this workshop we will delve into the reasons for taking the effort to match each Deaf student, ideas for how to match each student as well as a few practice scenarios to help us apply what we've learned to real-world situations.

Educational Objectives:

At the conclusion of this workshop participants will be able to:

  • Identify at least 5 reasons why we need to match our interpretations to the language and ability level of Deaf students,
  • Articulate at least 3 strategies for how to best match our interpretations to each Deaf student we work with.
  • Apply strategies on how to match our interpretations to real-world scenarios through a process of analysis and brainstorming solutions.
