Workshop Description:
Omissions are often viewed as miscues in the interpreting process—something interpreters are trained to minimize whenever possible. Yet, in practice, there are moments when intentionally omitting part of a message is both appropriate and necessary to ensure effective communication.
In educational interpreting, delivering a message that is both accurate and accessible sometimes requires strategic decision-making, including the thoughtful use of omissions. This workshop will briefly examine omissions as a potential interpreting miscue, while primarily focusing on omissions as a purposeful interpreting strategy. Together, participants will analyze source texts, explore how interpreted products may differ from the original message, and discuss how interpreters can make informed choices that support clarity, comprehension, and student access in educational settings.


Workshop Objectives:

As a result of attending this workshop, participants will be able to:

  1. analyze omissions and how to integrate them into their interpreting product.
  2. combine their prior knowledge and skills with techniques presented to produce and demonstrate a dynamic interpreting product.

    Rebekah Snider is a nationally certified interpreter with nearly two decades of experience across K–12, post-secondary, community, and relay interpreting settings. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Religious Studies and Anthropology from the University of Virginia, along with Career Studies Certificates in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, and American Sign Language from Tidewater Community College. With a strong interest in linguistics, she has studied German, French, and Spanish in addition to American Sign Language.

            Rebekah currently serves as an Educational Interpreter with Virginia Beach City Public Schools and a Relay Interpreter with Sorenson Communications. Rebekah is deeply committed to supporting and empowering her fellow interpreters through both individualized mentorship and collaborative group learning, helping interpreters develop their skills, confidence, and professional practice.

            A Virginia native, Rebekah resides in Virginia Beach with her husband and daughter. Beyond her professional work, she enjoys raising caterpillars in her garden, playing the cello and handbells, and reading.
