Workshop Description:

This workshop will help interpreters identify and grow past their own biases, offer resources and strategies for participants to expand their extra-linguistic and cultural knowledge, and continue exploring the vast array of experiences that life has to offer. It will also provide awareness of the impact intersectionality and oppression have on a person's worldview and experience.

Educational Objectives:

At the conclusion of this workshop students will be able to:

• TV show/book Activity: 

  • Participants will be able to identify 2 groups of people who are under/misrepresented in mainstream media. Hopefully, they will commit to finding a show that accurately portrays these groups and their experiences.
  
  

  Privilege Walk Videos: 

  • Participants will be able to identify 3 groups of people that are underrepresented in the videos. 
  • Participants will be able to list the feelings expressed by the people in the videos and provide an explanation as to why the person might feel that way. The feelings will be used to create a sense of empathy. For example, the person said they felt angry every time slavery was brought up in school. Feeling: Anger. Reason: Unfair/unjust treatment, feels powerless to change things now, etc.
  
  

  Book/podcast/movie/vlog list: 

  • Participants will create a shared document. This document will be categorized and searchable based on media type and subject. The media types include books, movies, vlogs, and podcasts. The subjects/genre include: Deaf P.O.C.,  Deaf Mental Health, Indigenous Peoples, P.O.C., BLM, gender, mental health/substance abuse, LGBTQIA+, etc."

Presenter Bio:

Marella Stanger Lopez

Marcela is a native of Salt Lake City, Utah. She is a trilingual interpreter working with English, Spanish and ASL regularly. She has been interpreting professionally for over 13 years. She has a degree in Philosophy from the University of Utah and loves learning; that's one of the main reasons she loves interpreting- because you never stop learning! The other reason is because she just loves people, (and there isn't too much paperwork to do). Outside of interpreting she enjoys playing the violin, reading, bike rides with her daughter and family time. Her favorite titles are "wife" and "mom."
