Workshop Description:

This 3 -hour webinar is the designed for interpreters who usually understand most of the signed message but routinely miss the fingerspelled word. This class does not include expressive fingerspelling practice. Topics include: review of part I, types of fingerspelling, templates, context and deliberate practice. The goal is to introduce strategies that will lead to improved fingerspelled word recognition on the first try. This workshop is based on the book "Fingerspelled Word Recognition through Rapid Serial Visual Processing".

Educational Objectives:

At the conclusion of the webinar, participants will be able to:
 Describe how RSVP relates to fingerspelled word recognition.
 List the three types of fingerspelling,
 Explain how and why to develop templates,
 Discuss the importance of context and deliberate practice.

    Presenter Bio:

    Carol Patrie PhD

    Carol authored The Effective Interpreting Series, Fingerspelled Word Recognition through Rapid Serial Visual Presentation (RSVP) and Interpreting Settings. Carol is widely known for her landmark research on fingerspelling and teaching interpretation. She was on the faculty at Gallaudet as Professor and Director of the MA in Interpreting and received the Outstanding Graduate Faculty award.

    Carol is on the editorial boards of the International Journal of Interpreter Education and The Journal of Interpretation. She is a past president of the CIT and is a recipient of the Mary Stotler Award.
