Workshop Description:
This session focuses on building stronger connections with immigrant families of Deaf and hard of hearing children. Together we will explore cultural and language considerations, share tools for effective communication, and highlight resources that help families thrive.
Workshop Objectives:
As a result of attending this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Identify key cultural and linguistic barriers immigrant families with Deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) children often encounter.
- Apply culturally responsive strategies to engage immigrant families and build trust.
- Demonstrate effective communication approaches for collaborating with families who use multiple spoken and signed languages.
Presenter Bio:
Celena Ponce, works with immigrant families of Deaf and hard-of-hearing children, providing accessible language, education, and advocacy resources. Through Hands United, she supports families navigating communication, education systems, and immigration processes by developing multilingual, culturally responsive tools and community-based programs.
