Workshop Description:

In this workshop, learners will be exposed to a multitude of modalities for monitoring, managing, and rehabilitating work/stress related injuries to the musculoskeletal system. Participants will learn concepts related to the fascial system as it relates to sign language interpreters. The content of the workshop will center around stretching/fascial release techniques, strengthening routines, proper ergonomic principles, and mindfulness integration for overall interpreter career longevity.

Workshop Objectives:

As a result of attending this workshop, participants will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate at least three exercises and fascial releases designed to support muscles used in interpreting.
  2. Identify signs of muscular tension and fascial adhesions, and name two strategies for relief. 
  3. Develop a personalized daily or weekly movement routine for long-term physical wellness. 
  4. Describe the role of breath, hydration, diet, mindfulness, etc. in preventing overuse injuries.

    Presenter Bio:

    Dr. Davis C. Dyke is a Certified National Interpreter with a Ph.D. in Kinesiology and a Master's
    degree in Biomechanics. As a personal trainer, ASL teacher, and seasoned sign language interpreter with extensive experience in various settings, including Video Relay Service (VRS), he brings a unique perspective to the interpreting community. His work has spanned academic, professional, and athletic spaces, including founding and leading an ASL Club at the collegiate level to foster community and language growth.

    Dr. Dyke is passionate about promoting healthy movement patterns to ensure career longevity
    and prevent injury for interpreters and ASL users alike.  Known for his interactive and engaging teaching style, Dr. Dyke brings enthusiasm, compassion, and practical expertise to every session. He has mentored professional interpreters, ASL students, and Deaf athletes, emphasizing the importance of mindful movement. His mission is to help others move correctly and intentionally, not only to excel in their careers but to fully enjoy life with long-term health and job satisfaction.
